Whakatane was the first Maori landfall, and is a base for big-game fishing, observing dolphins, jet-boating, white-water rafting, hunting, hiking, paragliding, kayaking and trout fishing.
The town offers a historic walk and the only waterfall to be found in the centre of any town in New Zealand. The departure point for excursions by boat, helicopter and fixed-wing plane to Whakaari (White Island) where you will see steaming fumaroles and vents, and view the main crater area.
